What Else a Science Kit Needs
The box lists what is inside. The manual lists what you also need, and that is the list that decides whether the kit gets used.

The short answer
Across the kits we cover, four requirements are published and routinely missed: batteries that are not included, household materials the experiments assume you own, an adult for anything rated 10+, and an undisturbed surface. A kit that fails on any of these stays in the box regardless of how good it is.

Batteries, and exactly which ones
This is the single most common reason a science or electronics present goes unused on the day it is opened. Every figure below is published by the manufacturer, and almost none of it appears on a retail listing.

The kits that need nothing are worth knowing too. GraviTrax runs on gravity, KEVA planks on balance, and every ThinkFun logic game on nothing at all. If a household is tired of this problem, the battery guide lists the whole set.
The household items experiments assume
Several kits are designed around things you already own, which is a genuine strength — it is also an unstated dependency.
The Kids First Science Laboratory publishes 24 large plastic scientific tools and 10 double-sided experiment cards, and explicitly includes no chemicals: the experiments use household materials. That is why it works at 3 to 6+ and it means a parent needs to have read the card before the child opens it.
The Mega Science Lab publishes 45 experiments in the kit plus a bonus guide of 85+ further experiments using household items, for 130+ in total. The 85+ are the ones that never run out — and the ones that need a cupboard with vinegar and baking soda in it.
This is not a criticism of either kit. Household-item experiments are the only ones with no refill cost. But a household that does not cook will find the second half of that experiment list quietly unavailable.
An adult, and for how long
Adult-needed is one of the four things we check on every product, because a toy that requires a grown-up gets used when a grown-up is free — which is rarely, and almost never on the mornings it would help most.
Rated 10+ with real reagents means an adult in the room. The Chem C500 publishes 28 experiments, five chemicals and a 10+ rating; Thames & Kosmos states compliance with EN 71-4, the European standard for chemistry experiment kits. That rating is about what is in the bottles, not about difficulty.
Rated 8+ usually means an adult for the first session only. Snap Circuits at 8+ is a reading-and-patience rating. Once a child has followed one numbered diagram successfully they generally continue alone.
Some kits are explicitly designed to need nobody. The Robot Mouse publishes picture-based cards requiring no reading. Gravity Maze is self-checking — the marble either arrives or it does not. These are the kits that get used on a wet Tuesday.
Worth knowing before you buy
Geode-breaking kits need eye protection and a hard surface you do not mind marking. National Geographic publishes a minimum age of 8 for the Break Open Geodes kit and notes it contains small parts, not for children under 3.
Space, and whether it can stay out
Nobody prints this on a box and it decides more purchases than any specification does.
Kits that need a surface that stays undisturbed. Marble runs, GraviTrax tracks and crystal-growing setups all fail if they have to be cleared every evening. 4M crystal growing publishes seven experiments that take days rather than minutes — crystals grow on their own schedule, and that schedule needs a shelf.
Kits that pack away in a minute. Logic games, the Duo-Scope and anything in a case. If the household has no spare surface, this is the category to buy from.
Kits that need water and a sink. Most chemistry and crystal work. A kitchen table is the real location for these, not a bedroom desk.
The five-minute check before you buy
Read the manufacturer’s own page, not the retail listing, and look for four things: the battery line, whether chemicals are included or household materials assumed, the age rating and what kind of rating it is, and how long an experiment takes. Those four answers predict whether a kit gets used better than any review does — including ours.
Say the unwelcome thing
Do not buy a kit whose requirements you have not read
The commonest disappointment in this category is not a bad kit. It is a good kit opened on a morning when the required batteries, the required adult or the required surface was not available.
Five minutes on the manufacturer’s page before buying is worth more than any amount of comparison shopping afterwards.

Do science kits include everything you need?
Rarely. Batteries are almost never included, and several kits are designed around household materials on purpose — the Kids First Science Laboratory publishes no chemicals at all because its experiments use things from the kitchen, and the Mega Science Lab's 85+ bonus experiments work the same way.
Which science kits can a child use without an adult?
Ones rated 8 and under with no reagents. The Code & Go Robot Mouse publishes picture-based cards needing no reading, and ThinkFun's logic games are self-checking. Anything rated 10+ with real chemicals, such as the Chem C500 under EN 71-4, assumes an adult is present.
How much space does a science kit need?
It depends on whether the activity can be interrupted. Crystal growing takes days and needs a shelf that stays undisturbed; marble runs and track systems need a table that is not cleared each evening. Logic games and microscopes pack away in a minute.
