The two rows that decide it are the age and the ceiling. Everything else is close enough to be a matter of taste.

The age question

One year separates the published ratings, and at this age a year is a large difference in what a child can do with a hand-held controller.

The Mouse puts the program on the table. A four-year-old lays out arrow cards in a row, can see the whole program at once, and compares it with the maze. Errors are visible before anything moves.

Botley puts the program in the child’s head. Steps are entered on a remote, one button at a time, and the child has to hold the sequence in memory. That is a genuinely harder task, and it is why the rating is 5+.

The ceiling question

Here Botley wins clearly. Learning Resources publishes a 150-step maximum; it publishes no equivalent figure for the Mouse. For a child who will use the robot for two or three years, a ceiling they will not reach is the whole case.

The Mouse’s answer is the maze. Sixteen rearrangeable grids and 22 walls mean the problems keep changing even if the programs do not get much longer. That keeps a five-year-old engaged; it does not keep a seven-year-old engaged in the same way.

Batteries, which matter more than they look

Both are published as needing AAA cells that are not included: three for the Mouse, five for Botley. Five is more than most households keep spare, and a robot opened on a birthday with no batteries is the commonest bad start in this category.

Worth knowing before you buy

Both published ratings — 4+ and 5+ — are small-parts floors as well as ability estimates. The Mouse’s cheese wedge and tunnels and Botley’s obstacle pieces are small, so the youngest child in the house governs.

So which one

Four, or a young five: the Robot Mouse. Picture cards are the easier interface and the maze is a better toy at that age.

Five and up, with years of use ahead: Botley 2.0. The 150-step ceiling is worth more than a year of easier starts.

Buying once for a child of four who will keep it until eight: consider neither, and look at a robot that publishes an upgrade path onto block coding — see from coding toy to real code.
