What we can tell you, and what we cannot
We have not used Botley 2.0. There is no lab here, no shelf of samples and no test children, so there is no star rating on this page and no rating in the structured data behind it.
What we have done is compile the manufacturer’s published specifications, do the arithmetic on them, and set the result against the published numbers for every comparable product. That is a smaller claim than hands-on testing and it has the advantage of being checkable — every figure below links to the page it came from.
What we cannot tell you: how the plastic feels, whether the buttons are satisfying, how it survives two years of being dropped, or whether your particular child will love it. Where those things matter we say so rather than filling the gap.

What the numbers mean in practice
150 steps is not a marketing number. Most coding toys in this price band store eight to twenty steps, and a capable child hits that ceiling within weeks — at exactly the moment they have understood the idea and want to do something with it. A ceiling this high means the toy never becomes the constraint.
The 27 obstacle pieces matter as much as the robot. A coding robot with a fixed set of challenges is finished when the challenges are. A coding robot with a build-your-own course has a difficulty supply that scales with the child’s imagination.
“100% screen-free” is a specification, not a slogan. Learning Resources publishes that no tablet or app is required. Practically: nothing to unlock, no account, no competing apps one tap away, and two children can watch it cross a room.
Five AAA batteries is the one real annoyance. Published, not included, and it is the most common cause of a bad first morning with this product.
Who should skip it
A four-year-old. The published rating is 5+, and the remote-button interface is a genuine step above laying out picture cards. The Code & Go Robot Mouse is rated 4+ and is the better purchase at that age.
A child who will find it babyish. Some seven and eight-year-olds read the robot’s appearance as being for younger children, and that judgment is made before any specification is considered. If that is likely, coding board games or a buildable robot kit teach the same ideas without the presentation problem.
A household that wants a screen path. Botley publishes no upgrade to block or text coding. Sphero’s indi does, on the same hardware, which makes it the longer-lived purchase for a child heading that way.

That is an accurate description rather than a criticism — the coding here is a narrative device. As a toy for a four-year-old it is lovely. As the coding purchase, Botley is doing something else.
