Guide and picks
Chemistry Sets by Age
Real chemistry sets start at ten, and every maker says so. Here is what is published below that line, and what changes when a child crosses it.
By Sawyer V. · Published
The short answer
Real reagents start at ten: Thames & Kosmos publishes its C-series at 10+ and states EN 71-4 compliance, and MEL Chemistry is also 10+. Below that, buy tools and household chemistry instead — Kids First Science Laboratory is published at 3 to 6+ with 24 reusable tools and no chemicals.
Block & Beaker earns a commission when you buy through our links, at no cost to you. It never changes a ranking, and we say so plainly when the right answer is the cheaper set, or nothing at all. Full disclosure · How we pick.

5 picks, including 1 we tell you to skip. Ages shown are the manufacturer’s own rating, not ours.
The published line is ten
Every set on this site that contains real reagents is rated 10 and up, and the makers explain why: Thames & Kosmos states compliance with “EN 71-4, in which the safety requirements for chemistry experimental kits are established”. That rating is a safety floor, not a difficulty estimate, and it is the one age rating in this category we would never overrule.
The arithmetic
Published ratings, chemistry and near-chemistry
| Kids First Science Laboratory | 3 to 6+ · no chemicals |
|---|---|
| Nat Geo Mega Science Lab | 8+ · 45 in-kit, 85+ household |
| Nat Geo Mega Slime Kit | 8+ · 7 premade putties, 1 DIY lab |
| Thames & Kosmos Chemistry C500 | 10+ · 28 experiments, 5 chemicals |
| Thames & Kosmos CHEM C1000 | 10+ · 7 chemicals, EN 71-4 named |
| MEL Chemistry subscription | 10+ · 2-3 experiments a month |
What to buy at each age
Three to six: tools, not chemicals. Pipettes, beakers, magnifiers and a card telling a child to mix two things from the kitchen.
Seven to nine: household chemistry. The Mega Science Lab’s 85+ household experiments are the model — vinegar, bicarbonate, cabbage water, cornstarch.
Ten to twelve: a first real set. The C500’s 28 experiments with proper glassware and safety glasses.
Twelve and up: more reagents and a longer manual — the C1000, or a subscription if the ritual is what makes it happen.
What changes at ten
Three things, all published: the chemicals are real, the glassware is real, and the manual assumes a reader who can follow a written method. That last one is why the rating is not just about safety — a set of numbered steps in eight-point type is wasted on a seven-year-old.
Worth knowing before you buy
Follow the published rating on any set containing reagents, keep chemicals stored out of reach between sessions, and treat the first few sessions of a 10+ set as supervised. Thames & Kosmos names EN 71-4, the European standard for chemistry experiment kits, on its C-series.
So which one
Under six: Kids First Science Laboratory.
Eight or nine: the Mega Science Lab.
Ten to twelve: Chemistry C500.
Twelve and up: CHEM C1000.
Say the unwelcome thing
Do not buy a 10+ chemistry set for an eight-year-old
It is the most common request in this category and the one to refuse. The rating is about what is in the bottles, not about how clever the child is — and the household-chemistry kits at eight are genuinely good, not a consolation prize.
Where to go next
Chemistry sets for kids ranks the sets themselves, first science kits for ages 3 to 6 covers the youngest band, and chemistry subscription boxes covers the monthly option.

- None — experiments use household materials
Thames & Kosmos publishes 24 large plastic scientific tools described as durable, reusable and easy to handle, 10 double-sided experiment cards, no chemicals, and nothing consumed in the box, rated 3 to 6+.
A preschool chemistry set with no consumables is unusual, and it is why this one survives past its first fortnight: the tools then work on anything in the kitchen.

- The 20 card sides are a starting ladder; the tools then work on anything in the kitchen
- Does anything run out
- Nothing in the box runs out, because nothing in the box is consumed

- The same tools carry into any household-materials experiment for years
- Adult required
- Yes at three, less so at five. The cards are picture-led but the setup is not
Why we say so: Thames & Kosmos publishes 24 reusable tools and no chemicals. A preschool science kit with no consumables in it is unusual, and it is the reason this one survives past its first fortnight when kit-of-the-week alternatives do not.
What’s wrong with it
An adult sets it up at three; the cards are picture-led but the setup is not.

2. Ages 8 to 9
NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC Mega Science Lab
National Geographic · Mega Science Lab · maker rates it 8+
45 in-kit experiments across chemistry, earth science and science magic, plus 85+ using household items.
- Experiments in the kit
- 45, across chemistry, earth science and science magic
- Bonus guide
- 85+ further experiments using household items, for 130+ in total
- Includes
- Volcano build, glow-in-the-dark crystal growth, and the tools for both
- Stated age
- 8+
National Geographic publishes 45 experiments in the kit across chemistry, earth science and science magic, a bonus guide of 85+ further experiments using household items for 130+ in total, a volcano build and glow-in-the-dark crystal growth, rated 8+.
Two-thirds of the published content needs nothing but a kitchen, which is what makes this the sensible purchase at eight or nine — before a child is old enough for the rated chemistry sets.

- Guided, and the 45 in-kit experiments end. The 85 household ones do not
- Does anything run out
- The supplied materials run out; the household half of the book never does
- Room to grow
- The bonus guide is the genuinely durable part, and it costs the manufacturer almost nothing to include
- Adult required
- Supervision for the chemistry third; the earth science and household experiments are largely self-run
Why we say so: National Geographic publishes 45 in-kit experiments plus a bonus guide of 85+ using household items. That second number is why this kit outlasts most of its price band: roughly two-thirds of the published content needs nothing but a kitchen.
What’s wrong with it
The supplied chemicals are used up; the household half is not.

3. Ages 10 to 12
Thames & Kosmos Chemistry C500
Thames & Kosmos · 665012 · maker rates it 10+
28 experiments and a 48-page manual from five chemicals, with proper glassware.
- Experiments
- 28
- Manual
- 48 pages
- Chemicals included
- 5
- Equipment
- Safety glasses, test tubes, dropper pipettes, double-headed measuring spoon
Thames & Kosmos publishes 28 experiments, a 48-page manual, five chemicals, safety glasses, test tubes, dropper pipettes and a double-headed measuring spoon, rated 10 years and up, with one 9V battery required and not included.
A page and a half of manual per experiment is enough for a method, an explanation and a why, which is the difference between doing chemistry and watching a reaction.
Replay signal
- Open-ended or one-shot
- Guided, not open-ended: 28 experiments, then the manual is finished
- Does anything run out
- Yes — the chemicals are consumed, and Thames & Kosmos sells replacements
- Room to grow
- Steps up to the larger C1000, C2000 and C3000 sets in the same line
- Adult required
- The maker rates it 10+ and it involves real chemicals
Why we say so: Thames & Kosmos publishes 28 experiments, a 48-page manual and five chemicals. Five finite chemicals across 28 experiments is arithmetic, not opinion — this set has an end, and it is better to know that before Boxing Day than after.
What’s wrong with it
Five finite chemicals — the set has a published end.
| Experiments | 28 |

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC Mega Slime Kit & Putty Lab
National Geographic · NGMEGASPL · maker rates it 8+
Seven premade putties and one DIY lab — bought as chemistry more often than anything else here.
- Varieties
- 8 in total — 7 premade plus 1 DIY slime lab
- Premade types
- Magnetic putty, fluffy slime, glow-in-the-dark putty, liquid slime, color-changing putty, snotty slime, bouncing putty
- DIY portion
- One glow-in-the-dark slime lab with a stir stick
- Storage
- 8 tins
National Geographic publishes eight varieties in total — seven premade putties and slimes plus one DIY glow-in-the-dark slime lab — in 8 tins with a learning guide, rated 8 and up.
Slime is chemistry in the sense that everything is. As a chemistry set it is mostly a finished product in tins, and a child who asked for chemicals will know the difference.
Replay signal
- Open-ended or one-shot
- The seven premade putties are reusable toys rather than one-shot experiments
- Does anything run out
- Only the DIY lab runs out
- Room to grow
- Magnetic and color-changing putty demonstrate real properties, not just texture
- Adult required
- Not for the premade putties; briefly for the DIY mix
Why we say so: National Geographic publishes seven premade varieties plus one DIY lab. That ratio is the review: most of this kit is a reusable sensory toy with a science label, and one eighth of it is the experiment.
What’s wrong with it
One-eighth of the kit is the experiment.
