Head to head

LEGO DUPLO vs MEGA Bloks

The two toddler block systems every relative considers. The published age ratings are six months apart, and the maker is the bigger difference.

By Sawyer V. · Published

The short answer

Buy MEGA Bloks for a child just turning one, and DUPLO from eighteen months. MEGA publishes its First Builders bag at 1+ with 80 oversized pieces and a wheelbase. LEGO publishes the DUPLO Classic Deluxe Brick Box at 1½+ with 85 pieces — and DUPLO is LEGO’s own early-years line.

The piece counts are almost identical. The rows that differ are the age rating and the last one — and the last one is the decision for most families.

Six months apart

MEGA publishes 1+ and LEGO publishes 1½+. At the youngest end of the category, six months is a long time, and a published rating is a floor rather than a suggestion. A child turning one gets MEGA Bloks on the rating alone.

From eighteen months, both are rated for the child, and the question changes from “which is allowed?” to “which system do we want to be in?”

The maker is the real difference

DUPLO is LEGO’s own early-years line. For a family that expects to buy LEGO for years — and many do — starting with DUPLO keeps everything under one brand from the first birthday to the tenth.

MEGA is a different maker’s system. Neither LEGO nor MEGA publishes cross-compatibility with the other on the product pages we cite, so treat them as two separate collections rather than one that will merge.

What a toddler does with either

At one and two, mostly not building. A child this age knocks down the towers an adult builds, then gradually stacks two or three blocks, then presses them together. Both boxes do that job well; the blocks are big enough for small hands and forgiving enough for a toddler’s aim.

Worth knowing before you buy

Follow each published rating: MEGA Bloks 1+, DUPLO 1½+. An older sibling’s standard LEGO, rated 4+, is often the bigger hazard in a house with a toddler — keep it on a table rather than the floor.

So which one

Turning one: MEGA Bloks First Builders.

Eighteen months or older, with LEGO likely later: the DUPLO Classic Deluxe Brick Box.

Three, and the family wants wood: Lincoln Logs.

Say the unwelcome thing

Do not buy both

Two toddler systems from two makers means two half-collections. Choose on the age today and the brand you expect to be buying in three years, and put the money into more of one.

Where to go next

Building blocks for kids orders the whole block ladder by grip. The best LEGO sets for kids covers what comes after DUPLO, and STEM toys for 1 year olds covers the rest of that age.

1. Better from eighteen months

LEGO DUPLO Classic Deluxe Brick Box

Pieces

Stated age
1½ and up

Supplied in a brick box
Brick size
DUPLO scale — larger than standard LEGO bricks

LEGO publishes the DUPLO Classic Deluxe Brick Box with 85 pieces, rated 1½ and up, supplied in a brick box, at DUPLO scale — larger than standard LEGO bricks — with nothing consumed.

The maker is the argument. DUPLO is LEGO’s early-years line, so a child who starts here moves on to standard LEGO from the same brand, and the family buys into one system rather than two.

The brick box is a small practical point in its favor. A rigid box that the bricks go back into survives a toddler household better than a bag.

DUPLO is LEGO's early-years line, so the same brand continues into standard bricks

Why we say so: LEGO publishes 85 pieces rated 1½ and up. The DUPLO scale is the specification that decides it: bricks large enough for a toddler's grip, from the same maker whose standard bricks the child will move on to.

What’s wrong with it

Rated 1½+, six months later than MEGA Bloks.

2. Better at one

MEGA BLOKS First Builders Big Building Bag, 80 Pieces

MEGA · DCH62 · maker rates it 1+

80 oversized blocks in 10 shapes and 9 colors, with an attachable wheelbase, rated from one.

Pieces
80, in 10 shapes and 9 colors
Includes
Reusable storage bag; an attachable wheelbase

Oversized — designed for toddler hands

MEGA publishes 80 pieces in 10 shapes and 9 colors, a reusable storage bag and an attachable wheelbase, oversized for toddler hands, rated 1 and up, with nothing consumed.

A 1+ rating on a construction toy means the pieces are cleared for a child who still puts things in their mouth. That is why MEGA Bloks can arrive on a first birthday and DUPLO, on its published rating, cannot.

The wheelbase is a genuine extra. A tower that becomes a vehicle is a second game from the same box, and one a one-year-old understands.

Outgrown at four or five, when the child's hands are ready for smaller bricks

Why we say so: MEGA publishes the 80-piece count across 10 shapes and 9 colors with a 1+ rating. A 1+ rating on a construction toy means the pieces have passed small-parts testing for children who still mouth things, which is the specification that matters most at this age and the reason most brick sets start at three.

What’s wrong with it

Outgrown at four or five, and it is a different maker's system from LEGO.

3. The wooden step at three

Lincoln Logs 100th Anniversary Tin

Lincoln Logs · 100th Anniversary Tin · maker rates it 3+

111 real maple pieces joined by notches — the easiest wooden system for small hands.

111, real maple wood
Contents
Roof and roof facade pieces, wall logs, chimney, porch, fences, bonfire and bonfire seats
Build ideas included
3 — a tall tower, two small houses with a bonfire, a large cabin

Notched indentations; no clips, glue or connectors

Basic Fun publishes 111 real maple pieces joined by notched indentations with no clips, glue or connectors, three build ideas, rated 3+.

Where either brick system goes next if the family would rather add wood than more plastic. Notch-only joining needs no precision and no pressing.

Limited by piece count rather than by concept; sets combine

Why we say so: Basic Fun publishes 111 real maple pieces joined by notches with no connectors. Notch-only joining is why a three-year-old can build with these: there is nothing to align precisely and nothing to press hard.

What’s wrong with it

Rated 3+, so it waits for the third birthday.

LEGO publishes the Classic Large Creative Brick Box with 790 pieces in 33 colors, compatible with all LEGO construction sets, rated 4 and up.

It is the right box at four. At one or two it is a box of small parts, and bought early it becomes an old thing from the cupboard by the time the child is ready. Buy DUPLO now and this later.
