MEGA Bloks First Builders Big Building Bag Review
Reviewed from MEGA's published specifications. We have not built with it, and the shape count matters more here than the piece count.
By Sawyer V. · Published
The short answer
The MEGA Bloks First Builders Big Building Bag is the set to buy for a one-year-old. MEGA publishes 80 pieces in 10 shapes and 9 colors, an attachable wheelbase, a reusable storage bag and oversized blocks designed for toddler hands, rated 1 and up — the lowest published rating of any construction set we cover.
Block & Beaker earns a commission when you buy through our links, at no cost to you. It never changes a ranking, and we say so plainly when the right answer is the cheaper set, or nothing at all. Full disclosure · How we pick.

What we can tell you, and what we cannot
We have not built with it. No lab, no samples, no test children, and no star rating on this page or in its structured data.
MEGA’s published piece count, shape and color counts, included parts, block sizing and age rating we can report and compare across the category. How the plastic holds up after two years in a toy box, we cannot.

What the numbers mean in practice
Ten shapes matters more than eighty pieces. A one-year-old is not building; they are sorting, banging, filling and emptying. Shape and color variety is what makes those games last, and it is why the same 80 pieces still get used at three, when the child finally starts making something on purpose.
Age one is a size rating, not a skill rating. MEGA publishes oversized blocks designed for toddler hands. That is the entire reason this set can be left out in a room where a child is still putting things in their mouth, and the reason LEGO Classic at 4+ cannot.
The bag is a real part of the product. Published as reusable storage, and at this age storage is what keeps a set alive. Eighty loose pieces with nowhere to go become eighty pieces under a sofa within a month.
No batteries and no consumables. Nothing in the box runs out, so this survives a second child intact — which is the quiet argument for buying the bigger bag rather than a themed set.
The wheelbase is the interesting part
The one included part that is not a block is the attachable wheelbase, and it does more work than its size suggests.
A stack that rolls is a different toy from a stack that sits there. It converts building into pushing, which is a game a one-year-old already understands, and it gives a child a reason to rebuild after every crash rather than wander off.
It is also the clearest cause-and-effect demonstration in the box: build it taller, push it, watch what happens. That is the same lesson the gear and circuit sets teach three years later, arriving in a form a toddler can actually run.
Worth knowing before you buy
Who should skip it
Anyone already committed to DUPLO. Neither maker publishes cross-compatibility between the two systems, so mixing them mostly produces two half-sets that do not connect.
Children already three. At three the published ratings open up, and a magnetic tile set or a larger brick box is a better use of the same money.
Under-ones. Below the published rating, a weighted stacking toy gives a six-month-old something to do that blocks cannot.
Say the unwelcome thing
Do not buy two block systems at once
It is the most common first-birthday mistake. Two half-sets of different systems build less than one complete set of either, and the child spends the first year discovering which pieces refuse to join. Pick one, then add to it.
Where it sits
This set leads STEM toys for 1 year olds and appears in the best first building set, DUPLO vs MEGA Bloks and STEM toys for 2 year olds.

1. The product
MEGA BLOKS First Builders Big Building Bag, 80 Pieces
MEGA · DCH62 · maker rates it 1+
80 oversized pieces in 10 shapes and 9 colors, with a wheelbase and a bag.
- Pieces
- 80, in 10 shapes and 9 colors
- Includes
- Reusable storage bag; an attachable wheelbase
- Stated age
- 1 and up
- Block size
- Oversized — designed for toddler hands
MEGA publishes 80 pieces in 10 shapes and 9 colors, a reusable storage bag, an attachable wheelbase, oversized blocks described as designed for toddler hands, and a stated age of 1 and up, with no consumables.
Age one is the specification that decides this purchase. Every other construction set we cover publishes 3 or above, with a single exception: LEGO publishes DUPLO at 1½. A set rated for a one-year-old is a category of two, and this is the lower-rated of the two.
Ten shapes is the second number to read, and it is the one buyers skip. Eighty identical rectangles would be a dull hour; 80 pieces across ten shapes and nine colors is a sorting toy, a color-matching toy and a stacking toy before it is ever a building set.

- Open-ended, and at this age that is the entire point
- Does anything run out
- Nothing runs out
- Room to grow
- Outgrown at four or five, when the child's hands are ready for smaller bricks
Why we say so: MEGA publishes the 80-piece count across 10 shapes and 9 colors with a 1+ rating. A 1+ rating on a construction toy means the pieces have passed small-parts testing for children who still mouth things, which is the specification that matters most at this age and the reason most brick sets start at three.
What’s wrong with it
It is its own system, so nothing here grows into LEGO later.

2. The direct rival
LEGO DUPLO Classic Deluxe Brick Box
LEGO · 10914 · maker rates it 1½+
85 pieces at DUPLO scale, supplied in a brick box.
- Pieces
- 85
- Stated age
- 1½ and up
- Storage
- Supplied in a brick box
- Brick size
- DUPLO scale — larger than standard LEGO bricks
LEGO publishes 85 pieces, a stated age of 1½ and up, supply in a brick box, and DUPLO-scale bricks — larger than standard LEGO bricks.
The counts are almost identical, so the decision is not 80 against 85. It is which system the household will keep buying, and whether the child is one or nearly two. See DUPLO vs MEGA Bloks for the full comparison, and the DUPLO review.

- Open-ended — a box of bricks with no single model
- Does anything run out
- Nothing runs out
- Room to grow
- DUPLO is LEGO's early-years line, so the same brand continues into standard bricks
Why we say so: LEGO publishes 85 pieces rated 1½ and up. The DUPLO scale is the specification that decides it: bricks large enough for a toddler's grip, from the same maker whose standard bricks the child will move on to.
What’s wrong with it
Published from 1½, so it is six months later, and it is a different system.

3. Before blocks
Fat Brain Toys Tobbles Neo
Fat Brain Toys · Tobbles Neo · maker rates it 6 months+
Six weighted pieces published to wobble, balance, nest and spin.
- Pieces
- 6 weighted pieces
- Behavior
- Published as weighted to wobble, balance, nest and spin
- Stated age
- 6 months and up
- Batteries
- None
Fat Brain Toys publishes 6 weighted pieces, described as weighted to wobble, balance, nest and spin, with a stated age of 6 months and up, no batteries and no consumables.
This is the honest answer below one. Stacking a weighted piece that rights itself teaches cause and effect months before a child can press two blocks together, and it does not need the pincer grip that blocks do.
Replay signal
- Open-ended or one-shot
- Stack, nest, spin or push — there is no single correct way to use it
- Does anything run out
- Nothing runs out
- Room to grow
- Nesting and stacking in order arrive months after wobbling does
Why we say so: Fat Brain Toys publishes six weighted pieces that wobble, balance, nest and spin, rated 6 months and up. The weighting is the specification: a piece that rocks back instead of falling over gives a baby's push a visible, repeatable result.
What’s wrong with it
Six pieces is not building, and it is outgrown sooner.
| Pieces | 6 weighted pieces |

| Stated age | 6 months and up |

Magna-Tiles publishes 100 pieces in the Classic set — 50 squares, 4 large squares, 20 equilateral triangles, 11 right triangles and 15 isosceles triangles — with magnets sealed inside and a stated age of “3-99 Years”.
Bought for a first birthday it sits in a cupboard for two years. It is an excellent set at three, and at one the published rating is the whole answer.

Why we say so: Magna-Tiles publishes the full 100-piece shape breakdown, lists no consumable parts, and states that “all pieces are compatible with and complementary to all other MAGNA-TILES sets.”
What’s wrong with it
Published from three, and the pieces are flat tiles rather than blocks.

Questions people actually ask
Frequently asked
Is the MEGA Bloks Big Building Bag worth it?
For a one- to three-year-old, yes. MEGA publishes 80 pieces in 10 shapes and 9 colors, an attachable wheelbase, a reusable storage bag and oversized blocks designed for toddler hands, rated 1 and up. Nothing runs out and no batteries are needed.
What age are MEGA Bloks First Builders for?
MEGA publishes 1 and up. That is the lowest published age rating of any construction set we cover - LEGO publishes 1 1/2 for DUPLO and 4 for standard LEGO Classic - and it reflects block size rather than building skill.
What comes in the Big Building Bag?
MEGA publishes 80 pieces in 10 shapes and 9 colors, an attachable wheelbase and a reusable storage bag. There are no batteries and no consumables.
MEGA Bloks or DUPLO?
The counts are close - MEGA publishes 80 pieces from age 1, LEGO publishes 85 from 1 1/2 - so decide on the age of the child and which system the household will keep buying rather than on the piece count. DUPLO vs MEGA Bloks.
Do MEGA Bloks work with LEGO or DUPLO bricks?
Neither maker publishes cross-compatibility between the systems, and we are not going to imply it. Treat them as separate systems and pick one to build a collection in.
What comes after MEGA Bloks First Builders?
At three, magnetic tiles or a larger brick box. Magna-Tiles publishes 100 tiles from a stated age of 3-99, and LEGO publishes the Classic Large Creative Brick Box at 790 pieces from age 4. The best first building set.
