Two different toys from the same shelf

Coding Critters is a character toy with coding. The pet and the playset are the product; the coding activities are one of several ways to play with them.

Why the maze matters

A fixed challenge is solved once. A challenge the child can rebuild is solved again and again, differently each time. Sixteen grids and twenty-two walls give the Robot Mouse that second kind of longevity, and the ten activity cards are a starting ladder rather than the whole of it.

Why the pet matters

Some four-year-olds are not yet interested in solving problems for their own sake, and are very interested in looking after an animal. For that child, Coding Critters gets played with far more, and the coding activities come along for the ride.

The coding ceiling, for both

Neither publishes a maximum program length. The same maker’s Botley 2.0 publishes 150 steps, rated 5+, and it is the natural next step for either child once sequencing has clicked.

Worth knowing before you buy

Both published ratings are 4+, which is a small-parts floor as well as an ability estimate. The Mouse’s cheese wedge and tunnels are small; keep them away from a younger sibling.
