Why grip is the whole decision
A block set fails when a child cannot physically make two pieces hold. At one, that means anything smaller than a fist-sized brick. At three, anything that needs alignment. At four, anything without studs to guide it.
The published age ratings track this closely, which is why they are more useful than any description of the blocks themselves.
Plastic or wood
Material matters less than joining method. Notched wooden logs work at three because notches remove precision; unconnected wooden planks need five because balance is the whole task. Compare the published age, not the material.
Worth knowing before you buy
Every low age rating on this page — 1+, 1½+, 3+ — is a small-parts safety floor. MEGA Bloks (1+) and DUPLO (1½+) are rated for toddlers; standard LEGO at 4+ is not, and it governs the whole household.

Say the unwelcome thing
Do not buy the next rung early
A four-year-old given planks, or a two-year-old given standard LEGO, cannot make the pieces behave. The set gets read as boring when the real problem was the grip.
