What Electronics Kits Actually Teach
The claims on the box are broad. What the format mechanically requires is narrower, more specific and genuinely worth having.

The short answer
A snap-together kit reliably teaches three things: that a circuit must form a complete loop, that components have roles, and that a fault is found by checking each step. What it does not teach is soldering, breadboarding, component selection or any electrical theory beyond the diagrams.

What the format mechanically requires
We only claim what a toy makes a child actually do. On a snap kit that is a short and honest list.

The one idea that transfers most
A circuit must form a complete loop. It sounds trivial and it is the single concept beginners most reliably fail to hold, right up to adult hobbyists.
A snap kit teaches it physically and repeatedly: the loop is closed or the LED is dark, several hundred times. Snap Circuits Classic publishes 305 numbered projects, which is 305 opportunities to be shown the same thing.

Why projects per part is the honest metric
A big number on the box tells you how long the manual is. The ratio tells you how much each component is doing, and therefore whether the child is learning that parts recombine or just that instructions can be followed.

A kit where one component appears in nine circuits is teaching something a kit with a low ratio is not.
What these kits do not teach
Being specific here is the point of the page.
Soldering. Nothing in a snap kit is soldered, and the format exists precisely so that nothing has to be.
Breadboarding and discrete components. Snap parts are color-coded modules on carriers. A resistor here is a labeled block, not a striped cylinder to be identified.
Component selection. The manual says which part goes where. Choosing a resistor value for a purpose is a different skill and it is not present.
Electrical theory. No Ohm’s law, no calculation. A child learns that a component does something, not why or by how much.
Anything about mains electricity. Everything here runs on four AA cells, deliberately.
Worth knowing before you buy
Snap kits are designed so that nothing can be wired dangerously and they run on AA batteries. Nothing learned here should be treated as preparation for working on anything that plugs into a wall — that is a different category with different risks.
What the age ratings really mean
Elenco publishes 8+ across the line, with a not-for-under-threes small-parts warning. On this product the 8+ is a reading-and-patience estimate rather than a safety one: the circuits run on four AA cells.
Practically, a patient seven-year-old with an adult nearby manages fine, and a disengaged ten-year-old does not. The rating is about following a numbered diagram accurately.
Where a kit stops being enough
For a teenager heading towards electronics as a subject, the snap format eventually becomes the limitation — modules that cannot be wired wrongly are exactly right for a child and constraining at fifteen.
We do not recommend specific soldering equipment, because we have not tested any and this is a category where an unverified recommendation could put a teenager in front of a hot iron with bad advice. What we can say is where these kits stop.

What a child can honestly say afterwards
A useful test of any educational claim is what the child could explain to somebody else. After a few hundred snap projects, the honest list is short and real.
“It only works if the loop is complete.” Reliably learned, and it is the concept beginners most often lack.
“This part makes sound, that one makes light.” Component roles, learned by repetition across many circuits.
“I checked each connection until I found the wrong one.” Systematic fault-finding, which transfers well beyond electronics.
What they will not be able to say is why a particular resistor value was chosen, or what would happen if it changed. That is not a shortcoming of the child.
Where the honest value actually sits
The case for these kits is not that they teach electronics. It is that they are open-ended, have no consumables, publish very long project ladders and can be used without an adult after the first session.

Do not buy a themed set as a first electronics kit
