Guide and picks

Are Magnetic Tiles Safe for Toddlers?

Every brand worth buying publishes the same age: three and up. The reason is not the size of the tile.

By Sawyer V. · Published

The short answer

No major magnetic tile set is published for under three. Magna-Tiles states 3–99 years, PicassoTiles states 3 and up, Connetix states 3+ and Magformers states 3+. Under three, buy oversized bricks instead — MEGA BLOKS First Builders publishes 1 and up, and LEGO DUPLO Classic publishes 1½ and up. The rating on a tile is about the magnet, not the tile.

Block & Beaker earns a commission when you buy through our links, at no cost to you. It never changes a ranking, and we say so plainly when the right answer is the cheaper set, or nothing at all. Full disclosure · How we pick.

What every brand publishes

The arithmetic

Magnetic tiles: published age and what each maker says about the magnet

Magna-Tiles Classic 100“3-99 Years” — lattice plus “fastening rivets keep magnets safe and secure”; no standard named
Connetix Rainbow 100“Recommended for builders aged 3+” — “ultrasonically sealed and riveted for extra safety”
Magformers Basic 623+ — rotating neodymium magnets inside the frame; names CE, ASTM and EN71
PicassoTiles 1003 and up — rounded edges, non-toxic ABS; magnet retention not published
PicassoTiles Car Truck base3 and up — “magnets sealed inside”, tested to ASTM and CPSIA
LEGO DUPLO Classic 109141½ and up — no magnets in the product
MEGA BLOKS First Builders1 and up — oversized bricks, no magnets in the product
Four tile brands, four independent companies, one identical published age. When competitors who agree on nothing else publish the same number, the number is not marketing.

Why the rating is three and not two

A magnetic tile is a plastic shell with a small, strong magnet sealed inside. Two separate things follow from that, and only one of them is about size.

The magnet is the hazard, not the tile. A tile is far too large to swallow. A magnet that has come out of a cracked tile is not. This is why the two makers who say the most about safety — Magna-Tiles and Connetix — both choose to publish how the magnet is held in rather than how big the tile is. Magna-Tiles publishes rivets; Connetix publishes “ultrasonically sealed and riveted”.

Three is also when tiles start working. The published rating is doing two jobs at once, and it is worth separating them. A two-year-old mostly knocks tiles over, because holding one flat against another while a magnet decides which way to turn is a genuine hand skill. The age is a safety floor and a competence floor in the same number, which is why neither buying up nor buying down is a good idea here.

What to check on a set you already own

Cracks along the weld line. Tiles crack at the seam, not across the face. A hairline split at the edge is the signal to retire that tile, not to wait and see.

Count the set occasionally. Not for tidiness — for the missing one. A tile that is genuinely gone is almost always under furniture, but a tile that broke and left a magnet behind is the case worth finding.

Separate the marbles. If a marble-run pack lives in the same tub as the tiles, the tub is now a 3+ tub for the marbles’ reason rather than the tiles’. Storing them apart is the cheapest safety measure on this page. See how to store magnetic tiles.

Worth knowing before you buy

If you believe a child has swallowed a magnet, or more than one, treat it as urgent and contact a doctor or emergency service immediately rather than waiting for symptoms. Multiple magnets are the serious case, because they can attract to each other through tissue. We are not clinicians and this page is not medical advice; what we can tell you is what the makers publish, which is that no tile brand on this site is rated for a child under three.

So which one

They are three or older: any of the four brands. Magna-Tiles if a toddler also lives there, PicassoTiles if the budget decides.

They are two: DUPLO Classic, and tiles on the third birthday.

They are one: MEGA BLOKS First Builders.

There is a crawler in the house: plain tiles only. Leave the marble-run version for later.

Say the unwelcome thing

Do not buy an unbranded tile set because it is cheaper

This is the one place on this site where brand is a safety argument rather than a snobbery argument. The four named brands all publish a 3+ rating and three of them publish something specific about magnet retention or a tested standard. A set with no named maker publishes neither, and the part you cannot inspect from the outside is exactly the part that matters.

Where to go next

The magnetic tiles roundup ranks the brands on shape counts and value, magnetic tiles compared puts three of them side by side, and toy safety standards explained covers what ASTM, EN 71 and CPSIA actually test.

Magna-Tiles MAGNA-TILES Classic 100-Piece Set

1. Safest published magnet retention

MAGNA-TILES Classic 100-Piece Set

Magna-Tiles · 4300 · maker rates it 3-99 years

The only brand here that publishes how the magnets are held in: a lattice plus rivets.

Pieces
100
Shape mix
50 squares, 4 large squares, 20 equilateral triangles, 11 right triangles, 15 isosceles triangles
Stated age
“3-99 Years”
Material
“Food-grade, non-toxic MABS plastic that are free from BPAs, phthalates, and latex”

Magna-Tiles publishes a stated age of “3-99 Years”, a signature lattice plus “fastening rivets keep magnets safe and secure”, and “food-grade, non-toxic MABS plastic that are free from BPAs, phthalates, and latex”.

That rivet sentence is the whole reason this set leads a safety page. Every magnetic tile holds a small, strong magnet inside a welded plastic shell. The published question is not whether the plastic is non-toxic — they all say it is — but what the maker says about keeping the magnet inside the shell if a tile is thrown down a stairwell for two years. Magna-Tiles is explicit about it.

If there is a younger sibling in the house and you are buying tiles for the older child anyway, this is the published reason to buy this brand rather than a cheaper one. See the Magna-Tiles review.

LEGO LEGO DUPLO Classic Deluxe Brick Box

2. Best published answer under three

LEGO DUPLO Classic Deluxe Brick Box

LEGO · 10914 · maker rates it 1½+

85 DUPLO-scale bricks published from 1½ and up, with no magnets anywhere in the box.

Pieces
85
Stated age
1½ and up
Storage
Supplied in a brick box
Brick size
DUPLO scale — larger than standard LEGO bricks

LEGO publishes 85 pieces at DUPLO scale, larger than standard LEGO bricks, rated 1½ and up, in a brick box, with no consumables.

This is the honest substitute for a parent who wants tiles at eighteen months. The play is similar in the way that matters at that age — pick a piece, join it, make a thing that stands — and the published rating is eighteen months rather than three because there is nothing inside a DUPLO brick that could come out.

Buy the tiles on the third birthday. See the DUPLO Classic review and STEM toys for 2 year olds.

DUPLO is LEGO's early-years line, so the same brand continues into standard bricks

Why we say so: LEGO publishes 85 pieces rated 1½ and up. The DUPLO scale is the specification that decides it: bricks large enough for a toddler's grip, from the same maker whose standard bricks the child will move on to.

What’s wrong with it

Builds in one direction only — DUPLO stacks, it does not make walls stand at angles.

MEGA MEGA BLOKS First Builders Big Building Bag, 80 Pieces

Oversized — designed for toddler hands

MEGA publishes 80 pieces in 10 shapes and 9 colors, oversized and designed for toddler hands, with a reusable storage bag and an attachable wheelbase, rated 1 and up.

One year old is the lowest published age of any construction set on this site, and oversized is the published reason. A brick too big to swallow does not need a magnet warning or a small-parts warning, which is why this rating can sit two full years below every tile set.

Outgrown at four or five, when the child's hands are ready for smaller bricks

Why we say so: MEGA publishes the 80-piece count across 10 shapes and 9 colors with a 1+ rating. A 1+ rating on a construction toy means the pieces have passed small-parts testing for children who still mouth things, which is the specification that matters most at this age and the reason most brick sets start at three.

What’s wrong with it

Outgrown at four — this is a two-to-three-year toy, not a ten-year one.

Not published by the manufacturer

PicassoTiles publishes 100 pieces, a stated age of 3 and up, and non-toxic BPA-free ABS plastic with a smooth surface and rounded edges. It does not publish a shape breakdown and makes no cross-brand compatibility claim.

The absence is worth saying out loud on a safety page. Rounded edges and non-toxic plastic are published; how the magnets are secured is not. That is not evidence of a problem — it is an absence of evidence, and at a third of the price of Magna-Tiles it is the trade you are making.

Nothing is wrong with this set — it is a good one, and it has its own review here. The point is narrower: it is the one tile purchase that introduces a second, separate hazard class into a room. A plain tile is a sealed shell. A marble is a marble.

If the youngest child in the house is still putting things in their mouth, buy plain tiles now and the marble run later.

Questions people actually ask

Frequently asked

Are magnetic tiles safe for a 1 year old?

Not on the published ratings. Magna-Tiles publishes 3-99 years, PicassoTiles 3 and up, Connetix 3+ and Magformers 3+. For a one-year-old, MEGA BLOKS First Builders publishes 1 and up and LEGO DUPLO Classic publishes 1½ and up, and neither contains a magnet. STEM toys for 1 year olds.

Are magna tiles safe for 2 year olds?

Magna-Tiles publishes a stated age of 3-99 years, so two is below the maker's own rating. At two, DUPLO Classic at 1½ and up gives similar build-and-stack play with no magnet in the product. STEM toys for 2 year olds.

Why are magnetic tiles rated 3 and up when the tiles are so big?

Because the rating is about the magnet sealed inside the tile, not the tile. Magna-Tiles publishes a lattice plus fastening rivets and Connetix publishes ultrasonic sealing plus riveting, which is what both makers choose to say about keeping the magnet in.

Which magnetic tile brand publishes the most about safety?

Magna-Tiles and Connetix. Magna-Tiles publishes food-grade non-toxic MABS plastic and rivet-secured magnets; Connetix publishes non-toxic BPA and phthalate-free ABS that is ultrasonically sealed and riveted. Magformers is the only one of the four that names CE, ASTM and EN71. Magnetic tiles compared.

Is a magnetic tile marble run safe for a toddler?

The tiles are rated 3+ like any other set, but these packs add steel-weighted marbles, which is a separate hazard from the tiles themselves. In a house with a child still mouthing objects, buy plain tiles first and add the marble run later. Magnetic tile marble runs.

What should I do if a tile cracks?

Retire that tile. Tiles split along the welded seam rather than across the face, so a hairline crack at the edge is the point at which the magnet is no longer reliably contained.

Do magnetic tiles meet a safety standard?

Of the four brands here, only Magformers names standards on its product page - CE, ASTM and EN71. PicassoTiles names ASTM and CPSIA testing on its Car Truck base. Magna-Tiles and Connetix describe their materials and magnet construction without naming a standard. Toy safety standards explained.
