Why weight is a feature
The case for wood is usually made on aesthetics and durability, and both are true but secondary. The property that actually changes what a child builds is mass.

The three wooden joining methods
Stacked, no connection at all. KEVA planks. Nothing holds anything — the structure stands because it is balanced. This is the most demanding and the most open-ended, and it is where the real physics is.
Notched. Lincoln Logs. Pieces drop into grooves. Very forgiving for small hands, and it constrains what can be built to a fairly narrow style.
Slotted and channelled. Quadrilla blocks, where holes and channels route a marble. The blocks stack like plain blocks but carry a function through them.
Wood versus plastic, honestly
Wood wins on: mass and therefore stability; durability across a decade; and being pleasant enough to leave out in a living room, which matters more than it sounds because a toy that lives on the floor gets played with.
Plastic wins on: price per piece; translucency, which is a genuinely different play property; and function, because a magnetic cannon or a vortex has no wooden equivalent.
Neither wins on: safety. Both are small-parts rated, and a wooden block dropped on a foot hurts more than a plastic one.
Worth knowing before you buy
The wooden sets here are rated 3+ and 5+ for small-parts reasons, and the Quadrilla set includes 50 marbles, which are a choking hazard for any child under three regardless of who the set was bought for.
Splinters are the wood-specific consideration. All three sets here are published as precision-cut or finished hardwood, but any wooden toy that has been chewed or chipped should be checked along the edge before it goes back in the box.
Say the unwelcome thing
Do not buy wood for the aesthetics alone
A wooden set costs meaningfully more per piece than a plastic equivalent, and if the reason is that it photographs well in a living room, that is a decorating decision rather than a toy decision.
Buy wood when the weight is doing something: a marble run that must stand without a base plate, or a balance-based set where mass is the entire subject. Otherwise the plastic set has more pieces for the money.

Identical dimensions is the specification. Because every plank is interchangeable, nothing in the box constrains the build: there is no piece that only fits one way and no correct answer.
The difficulty comes entirely from balance, which is why this set has no meaningful ceiling. The same 200 planks work for a five-year-old stacking a tower and an adult attempting a cantilever.
