How We Pick

What we do

1. Read the manufacturer’s published information. Manuals, spec sheets, contents lists, stated age ratings, supervision guidance and battery requirements. Where a manufacturer publishes its manual free — Thames & Kosmos does — we read the manual.
2. Compile the numbers that are comparable. Piece counts, project counts, challenge counts, part counts, manual page counts, chemical counts. These are published, they are checkable, and they are the only figures in this category that mean the same thing across brands.
3. Do the arithmetic nobody else does. Projects per part. Manual pages per experiment. How many tiles a two-story building consumes. How many of a kit’s published experiments survive the supplies running out. Every division we do is stated so you can redo it.
4. Apply the Replay Signal. Four questions, answered from published information: is it open-ended or does it have a finished state; does anything run out; is there room to grow; does it need an adult to work at all. Each carries a mandatory “why we say so” line citing the fact underneath.
5. Cite the source, inline. Every specification links to the manufacturer page it came from. Where a manufacturer publishes nothing on a point, the row says “not published” rather than being quietly filled in.
6. Name something to skip. Every roundup on this site has exactly one product we recommend against, and it is on the page for a stated reason. Currently 39 across 39 pages.
7. Render prices live. Prices come from the retailer rather than being typed by us, and they are date-stamped. Where we cannot verify a price today, the page says “check price” rather than showing a number from last month.

What we do not do, said plainly

We have not tested these products. We do not own them. There is no lab, no shelf of samples, no test children and no panel of experts. Nothing on this site is based on having used a product, and nowhere on this site will you find the phrase “in our testing”.

We publish no star ratings, no scores and no rating markup in the structured data behind these pages, because a rating we generated would imply testing we did not do.

We make no claims about educational outcomes. Plenty of toy marketing asserts that a set builds spatial reasoning or improves problem-solving, usually with no citation. Where we say what a toy teaches, we mean what it mechanically requires the child to do — sequence steps, complete a circuit, plan two moves ahead — because that we can point at.

Why we tell you that

Because much of this category says it tested twenty toys and did not. Before building this site we looked at the field: most competitor pages carrying a byline also claimed hands-on testing, and in several cases the claim did not survive a look at what else the same publication reviews — office chairs, drum heads and children’s toys, all apparently tested for months.

We cannot beat that by making a better version of the same claim, and we are not going to try. A smaller claim that is true and checkable is worth more than a larger one that is neither.

How to check us

Every specification on this site links to the manufacturer’s own page. Every division we perform is stated with its inputs. That means any number here can be verified in about fifteen seconds, and if one is wrong you can prove it.

Currently 49 products carry published specification tables with sources. If you find a figure that does not match what the manufacturer publishes, tell us and we will correct the page within 48 hours with the change reflected in its last-updated date — contact us here, or email info@blockandbeaker.com.

What we genuinely cannot tell you

Worth being direct about, because the limits are real.

• How a toy feels in the hand, or whether the plastic creaks.
• Whether magnets are strong enough in practice. No brand publishes a pull force or magnet grade, so any ranking on this is somebody’s impression. What we can point at is the published retention method — how the magnet is held inside the tile.
• Reliability over two years of hard use.
• Whether a specific child will love it.

Where those things matter most we say so on the page rather than filling the gap with somebody else’s anecdote.

How we make money

We think the arrangement is defensible precisely because the picks are made from published information rather than from relationships: there is nothing we could be persuaded to say that a manufacturer’s own spec sheet does not already support.

How to tell us we are wrong

Email info@blockandbeaker.com or use the contact form. If you point at a figure that does not match what the manufacturer publishes, we will check it against the source and correct the page within 48 hours, with the change visible in the page’s last-updated date.
