What to Buy After a First Science Kit
The useful question is not what is next. It is which third of the first kit they came back to.

Work out which part they returned to. If it was mixing, buy a real chemistry set. If it was looking closely, buy a microscope. If it was the rocks, buy a tumbler. If it was building the apparatus, the interest is engineering rather than science.

First kits are deliberately broad, and that is useful data

That breadth means the first kit has already run the experiment that matters: which part did the child do twice?

If they liked mixing things
Buy a real chemistry set and accept the supervision. The Chem C500 publishes 28 experiments, a 48-page manual and five chemicals with safety glasses, test tubes and dropper pipettes, rated 10 years and up under EN 71-4.
The step up from a starter kit is real equipment and a real manual. The step is also into an adult-present activity, which is the trade.
Below ten, the honest answer is more household chemistry rather than a rated chemistry set — the age floor is about the reagents.
If they liked looking at things
Buy a microscope, and buy on lighting rather than magnification. The Duo-Scope publishes 40x, 100x and 400x with dual LED lighting above and below the stage and five blank slides, rated 9 and older. At eight, the Nat Geo dual-LED scope publishes 20x and 50x.
This is the best second purchase in most cases, because a tool has no published ending. The first kit ran out; a microscope does not.
If they liked the rocks
A geode kit is the classic first taste and it ends after ten. The rock tumbler publishes four polishing grits, nine rough gemstone types, a noise-reducing barrel and an automatic shutoff timer, rated 8+ — and once the supplied rough is gone it works on anything the child picks up on a beach.
That transition, from a kit that ends to a machine that does not, is the clearest upgrade path in the whole category.
If they liked being outside with it
A bug catcher publishes a habitat with two magnified viewers, a scissor catcher, a net and tweezers, rated 4+, with no consumables. It is cheap, permanent and available from four.
Outdoor interest is the easiest to feed and the least expensive, because the specimens are free.
If they liked building the apparatus
This is the commonly misread signal. A child who spent longer assembling the volcano than watching it erupt is not telling you they like chemistry.

Watch what they do with the leftovers
A useful signal that costs nothing to collect. When a kit is finished, what happens to the equipment?
Test tubes and pipettes get reused for something else. That is a child who liked the process, and it points at more equipment rather than more experiments.
The magnifying glass gets carried around. That is a child who liked looking. Buy the microscope.
The empty geodes end up on a shelf. Collecting is the interest, and a rock tumbler feeds it indefinitely on free material.
Nothing gets kept. The kit was an activity rather than a subject, and the next purchase probably should not be a science kit.
Budget the second purchase differently
A first kit is a bet across several fields, and it is reasonable to spend modestly on it. A second purchase is a bet on one field the child has already chosen, so it is the one worth spending on.
That is the reverse of how most households do it — a large first kit and a small follow-up — and it is why so many second purchases go unused. The information needed to spend well only exists after the first kit has been opened.
Say the unwelcome thing
Do not buy a bigger version of the same starter kit
The instinct after a well-received first kit is to buy the larger one from the same range. That usually repeats a third of the content the child already did and adds more of the two thirds they ignored.
Follow the part they returned to instead. A narrower, deeper purchase beats a broader one at this stage.
If nothing stuck
Worth saying plainly: sometimes a first kit reveals that a child is not especially interested in science, and that is a real result rather than a failure of the kit.
In that case the sensible next purchase is not science at all. A construction set or a logic game teaches overlapping skills — sequencing, prediction, debugging — without the subject label.
Worth knowing before you buy
The step up from a starter kit is frequently the step into real reagents. Check whether the next purchase carries a 10+ rating and a named standard such as EN 71-4 before assuming it is a like-for-like upgrade.
