What is actually published for babies
We checked the stated age on every product this site covers. Three are published for a baby under one and one more for a first birthday. Everything else is rated from eighteen months up, most of it from three, or carries no published age at all.

What a STEM toy means at this age
Not construction and not experiments. The useful property before one is simple: the baby does something, and something happens — the same way every time. That is cause and effect, and it is the first scientific idea anyone learns.

What to buy for the first birthday

Worth knowing before you buy
Follow the published age rating on every toy. A 6-months-plus rating is the maker’s stated floor; a 3+ rating means the toy is not intended for a child under three, and small parts are the usual reason.
Check silicone toys regularly and take away anything torn. Keep an older sibling’s magnetic tiles, marbles and small pieces off the floor while a baby is crawling — loose magnets are a particular hazard if swallowed.

The instinct is to buy the excellent toy early so it lasts. At this age it does not work: a toy rated for three is a small-parts risk for a baby, and by the time it is safe it has become an old thing from the cupboard.
