LEGO DUPLO Deluxe Brick Box 10914 Review
Reviewed from LEGO's published specifications. We have not built with this set, and the piece count is read honestly below.
By Sawyer V. · Published
The short answer
The DUPLO Deluxe Brick Box is the safe first building set. LEGO publishes 85 pieces, a stated age of 1½ and up, and supply in a brick box. At this age the box and the age rating do more work than the piece count does.

What we can tell you, and what we cannot
We have not built with it. No lab, no samples, no test children, and no star rating on this page or in its structured data.
LEGO’s published piece count, age rating and contents we can report and compare across the category. Which colors arrive in a given box, we cannot.
The specification that decides it
The arithmetic
DUPLO Deluxe Brick Box 10914, published
| Pieces | 85 |
|---|---|
| Stated age | 1½ and up |
| Storage | Supplied in a brick box |
| Type | Brick box — no single model to build |
| Batteries | None |
| Brick size | DUPLO scale — larger than standard LEGO bricks |
What the numbers mean in practice
85 is a starting quantity, not a collection. One toddler can build happily with 85 pieces; two children sharing will run out of the useful shapes quickly. Brick boxes are designed to be added to.
“Brick box” means no instructions, and that is the point. There is nothing to complete and nothing to get wrong, which is the right structure before a child can follow a diagram.
The age rating is about size, not skill. LEGO publishes DUPLO bricks as larger than standard LEGO bricks, and that published scale — rather than anything about building ability — is what the 1½ rating reflects.
It has a defined end. Children move to standard LEGO around four or five. DUPLO does not connect to that system, so plan the handover rather than expecting growth.
Worth knowing before you buy
The color mix is not published. LEGO publishes 85 pieces and DUPLO scale, but no breakdown of shapes or colors for this box. Magna-Tiles, by contrast, publishes its exact shape mix. If a specific piece type matters to you, buy a themed DUPLO set where the contents are listed.
Who should skip it
Anyone already committed to another system. MEGA publishes 80 pieces from age 1, and mixing systems mostly produces two half-sets.
Three-year-olds and up. At three, Magna-Tiles or a larger DUPLO set is a better use of the same money.
Households wanting a themed build. A brick box is deliberately open-ended; buy a themed DUPLO set if a specific thing is wanted.
Say the unwelcome thing
Do not buy standard LEGO early to save money later
It is the single most common building-set mistake. LEGO publishes 4+ on Classic boxes; a two-year-old handed those pieces is a small-parts problem, and the set ends up put away for two years anyway.
Where 85 pieces stops being enough
Building sets are bought by piece count and used by shape count, and the published numbers either side of this one show why.
The arithmetic
Published counts, first building sets
| MEGA Bloks First Builders | 80 pieces, 10 shapes, 9 colors, age 1+ |
|---|---|
| DUPLO Deluxe Brick Box 10914 | 85 pieces, age 1½+ |
| Magna-Tiles Classic | 100 tiles, 5 shapes, age 3-99 |
| LEGO Classic 10698 | 790 pieces, 33 colors, age 4+ |
Eighty-five is enough for one child building alone. It is not enough for two, and it is not enough for the point at about three when a child starts wanting a specific thing — a garage with a door, a tower taller than the table — rather than a shape.
The usual fix is a second DUPLO box rather than an early jump to standard LEGO, which publishes 4+ and 790 small pieces. Two brick boxes at two is a better year than one brick box and a set that has to be kept out of reach.
Nothing in it is consumable. LEGO publishes no consumables and no batteries for this set, which is why a brick box survives two children and a decade in a loft when a craft kit does not.
Where it sits
This set appears in the best first building set, engineering toys for preschoolers and STEM toys for 2 year olds.

Every pick, and what is wrong with it
Published specifications only, each linked back to the page it came from. Where a manufacturer publishes nothing, the row says so — we do not fill blanks in.

1. The product
LEGO DUPLO Classic Deluxe Brick Box
LEGO · 10914 · maker rates it 1½+
85 DUPLO pieces and a brick box to keep them in, from one of the two lowest age ratings in building toys.
- Pieces
- 85
- Stated age
- 1½ and up
- Storage
- Supplied in a brick box
- Brick size
- DUPLO scale — larger than standard LEGO bricks
LEGO publishes 85 pieces, a stated age of 1½ and up, supply in a brick box, and DUPLO-scale bricks — larger than standard LEGO bricks.
That 1½ rating is the figure that decides this purchase. Almost nothing else in building toys is published that low, and the reason is the brick scale: DUPLO pieces are made larger than standard LEGO bricks.
The box is not packaging, it is the product. Tidying a mixed pile into one container is what keeps a set in use at two years old, and a set that stays findable is a set that gets built.

- Open-ended — a box of bricks with no single model
- Does anything run out
- Nothing runs out
- Room to grow
- DUPLO is LEGO's early-years line, so the same brand continues into standard bricks
Why we say so: LEGO publishes 85 pieces rated 1½ and up. The DUPLO scale is the specification that decides it: bricks large enough for a toddler's grip, from the same maker whose standard bricks the child will move on to.
What’s wrong with it
85 pieces is a modest count once two children are building at once.

2. The bulk alternative
MEGA BLOKS First Builders Big Building Bag, 80 Pieces
MEGA · DCH62 · maker rates it 1+
80 pieces in 10 shapes and 9 colors, from a lower published age.
- Pieces
- 80, in 10 shapes and 9 colors
- Includes
- Reusable storage bag; an attachable wheelbase
- Stated age
- 1 and up
- Block size
- Oversized — designed for toddler hands
MEGA publishes 80 pieces in 10 shapes and 9 colors, an attachable wheelbase and a reusable storage bag, rated 1 and up, with oversized blocks designed for toddler hands.
The comparison is genuinely close at this age, and the deciding factor is what comes next in your house. See DUPLO vs Mega Bloks.

- Open-ended or one-shot
- Open-ended, and at this age that is the entire point
- Does anything run out
- Nothing runs out
- Room to grow
- Outgrown at four or five, when the child's hands are ready for smaller bricks
Why we say so: MEGA publishes the 80-piece count across 10 shapes and 9 colors with a 1+ rating. A 1+ rating on a construction toy means the pieces have passed small-parts testing for children who still mouth things, which is the specification that matters most at this age and the reason most brick sets start at three.
What’s wrong with it
A different system, so it does not grow into LEGO.

3. The other first set
MAGNA-TILES Classic 100-Piece Set
Magna-Tiles · 4300 · maker rates it 3-99 years
100 magnetic tiles that build fast, with no connection technique to learn.
- Pieces
- 100
- Shape mix
- 50 squares, 4 large squares, 20 equilateral triangles, 11 right triangles, 15 isosceles triangles
- Stated age
- “3-99 Years”
- Material
- “Food-grade, non-toxic MABS plastic that are free from BPAs, phthalates, and latex”
Magna-Tiles publishes 100 pieces in the Classic set — 50 squares, 4 large squares, 20 equilateral triangles, 11 right triangles and 15 isosceles triangles — with a stated age of “3-99 Years”.
Tiles reward a child who cannot yet press bricks together firmly. From three, most households end up owning both.

- Open-ended or one-shot
- Open-ended — there is no finished state to reach
- Does anything run out
- Nothing runs out
- Room to grow
- Every set combines with every other Magna-Tiles set
Why we say so: Magna-Tiles publishes the full 100-piece shape breakdown, lists no consumable parts, and states that “all pieces are compatible with and complementary to all other MAGNA-TILES sets.”
What’s wrong with it
Published from 3, so it waits about eighteen months.
| Pieces | 100 |
|---|---|
| Shape mix | 50 squares, 4 large squares, 20 equilateral triangles, 11 right triangles, 15 isosceles triangles |
| Stated age | “3-99 Years” |

Bought for a two-year-old it becomes a small-parts hazard shared with an older sibling. Wait for the published age.

- Open-ended or one-shot
- Open-ended — this is the box with no instructions and no finished model
- Does anything run out

- Every LEGO set the child is ever given pours into the same box
Why we say so: LEGO publishes the 790-piece count, the 33 colors and the box's compatibility with all LEGO construction sets. The absence of a build-this model is the product's stated design, not an omission.
What’s wrong with it
Published from 4, and full of small parts.
