Sixteen rearrangeable grids is the specification that decides the purchase. It converts a fixed puzzle into a supply of puzzles, and the child generates them.

What the numbers mean in practice

Picture cards buy a year. Almost everything else in this category assumes reading or a button interface. Directional symbols laid out on a table are the reason a four-year-old can work alone here.

Working alone is the whole value. Adult-needed is one of the four things we check, and a toy that requires a grown-up gets used when a grown-up is free — which is rarely, and never on the mornings it would help most.

The 10 activity cards are a ladder, not the content. They exist to show a child what a challenge looks like. After that the maze is the content, and the maze is infinite in the way a card deck is not.

No published step ceiling is the real limitation. Botley publishes 150 steps; Learning Resources publishes no equivalent figure for the Mouse. The longevity here comes from harder mazes rather than longer programs.

Say the unwelcome thing

Do not buy it without three AAA batteries

Published as required and not included. On a toy bought for a four-year-old, the gap between opening the box and finding batteries is the whole morning.

Who should skip it

A six or seven-year-old. The published rating is 4+ and it shows. An older child wants a program ceiling to push against, which means Botley or a buildable robot kit.

A household that wants no more disposable batteries. Matatalab and Sphero indi both publish rechargeable power.
