How to Clean STEM Toys Without Wrecking Them
The published material and construction of a toy tells you how to clean it. Guessing is how a magnetic tile stops being safe.

The short answer
Wipe, do not submerge. Magnetic tiles are sealed units and water that gets inside cannot come out; electronics and battery compartments should never meet liquid; wood absorbs and warps; optics need a dry lens cloth only. Warm soapy water on a cloth handles almost everything on this site.

Start with what the manufacturer publishes
Cleaning advice is usually generic. It should not be, because the published construction of a toy tells you exactly what will go wrong.

Magnetic tiles: wipe, never soak
This is the one that matters most, because it is a safety question rather than a cosmetic one.
Magna-Tiles publishes a signature lattice plus fastening rivets holding the magnets in. Connetix publishes tiles “ultrasonically sealed and riveted for extra safety.” Both descriptions mean the same thing: the tile is a closed unit with metal inside.
Water that gets past a seam has no way out. It sits against the magnet, and the failure mode is not a stain — it is corrosion inside a component whose whole safety case rests on staying intact.
What to do: a cloth wrung out in warm soapy water, then a dry cloth. Do not soak, do not put them in a dishwasher, do not leave them on a draining board.
Worth knowing before you buy
The genuine hazard in magnetic construction toys is two or more loose magnets, which can attract through tissue. That is what the sealing and riveting exist to prevent.
Any tile with a cracked corner, a split seam or a rattle should be retired rather than repaired or cleaned. Tape does not restore a safety seal.
Electronics: never anything wet
Snap Circuits publishes a requirement for four AA batteries, and the parts are real electronic components on plastic carriers. A dry brush or a puff of air handles dust; a damp cloth on the plastic base is the absolute limit.
Take the batteries out before cleaning anything, and before storing anything for a season. A leaking cell in a battery compartment destroys the contacts, and that is the most common way a working coding robot becomes scrap.
The same applies to Botley at five AAA cells and the Robot Mouse at three. Rechargeable products such as Sphero indi, published at 2+ hours per charge over USB, avoid this failure entirely — which is worth remembering at the point of purchase, not the point of cleaning.
Wood: dry, always
KEVA Structures publishes 200 solid pine planks precision-cut to identical dimensions. The precision is the product, and water is what destroys it — wood swells, and a plank that is half a millimetre thicker than its neighbors makes tall builds fail unpredictably.
A child reads that as their own failure rather than a warped plank. Use a dry cloth, and if something sticky has happened, a barely damp cloth followed immediately by a dry one.
Optics: less than you think
Both microscopes we cover publish real optical glass lenses. Glass lenses have coatings, and household cleaners strip them.
Body: a barely damp cloth. Lenses: a dry lens cloth, and only when there is visibly something on them. Never: paper towel, sleeve, window cleaner or breath-and-rub.
The same applies to a telescope. The Celestron FirstScope publishes a 76 mm aperture; dust on a 76 mm mirror costs almost nothing in image quality, and a scratch from cleaning it costs a great deal.
Cards, manuals and printed challenges
Easy to overlook and frequently the part that fails first. ThinkFun games publish 40 to 60 challenge cards each, and the Robot Mouse publishes 30 double-sided coding cards. Lose the cards and the toy is finished, however good the plastic is.

Say the unwelcome thing
Do not put construction toys in the dishwasher
It is the advice that circulates most and the one that does the most damage. Heat warps precision plastic, the drying cycle bakes water into sealed units, and detergent is harsher than anything these materials were tested against.
Warm water, a cloth, and ten minutes. That is the whole method.
