Osmo Genius Starter Kit Review
Reviewed from the manufacturer's published specifications and the arithmetic on them. We have not used it, and we say so.
By Sawyer V. · Published
The short answer
The Osmo Genius Starter Kit publishes five games — Tangram, Numbers, Words, Newton and Masterpiece — with an Osmo Base and reflector, 52 Words tiles, 40 Numbers tiles and 7 Tangram pieces, rated 6-10. An iPad is required and is not included, and that dependency decides more than any of the five games do.

What we can tell you, and what we cannot
We have not used this kit. No lab, no samples, no test children, no star rating on this page or in its structured data.
We can report what Osmo publishes and reason about the dependency it creates. We cannot tell you how well the reflector tracks in a dim room, or whether your child finds Masterpiece interesting after a fortnight.

| Numbers tiles | 40 |
| Tangram pieces | 7 |

What the numbers mean in practice
Five games is a hedge, and a good one. Most educational purchases are a single bet. This one is five, on five different subjects, which is why it survives a child’s taste better than a single-topic kit.
The tiles have no batteries. All the electronics live in a device you already own, so the physical half of this toy cannot go flat or break.
Ages 6-10 is a real ceiling here. Numbers and Tangram stretch past ten; Words does not. Unlike an open-ended construction set, this is a product with a published end, and it is worth buying at six rather than nine.
The adult is needed only to release the iPad. That sounds minor and it is the whole thing. A toy that requires negotiating for a shared device gets used when the device is free, which is rarely.
Who should skip it
A household with no iPad. There is no workaround. Buying a tablet to run it changes the price of this purchase by an order of magnitude.
A household with one shared iPad and several children. The published requirement collides with the household’s actual constraint, and the kit loses.
Anyone reducing screen time. The physical pieces make this better than an app, but it is still a product that turns the iPad on. Screen-free coding toys and coding toys vs coding apps cover the alternatives.

1. The product
Osmo Genius Starter Kit for iPad
Osmo · Genius Starter Kit · maker rates it 6-10
Five separate games in one box, so it degrades gracefully when a child tires of one.
- Games
- Five — Tangram, Numbers, Words, Newton and Masterpiece
- Contents
- Osmo Base and reflector, 52 Words tiles, 40 Numbers tiles, 7 Tangram pieces, stackable storage
- Screen required
- Yes — an iPad, not included
- Stated age
- Ages 6-10
Osmo publishes five named games and exact tile counts: 52 Words tiles, 40 Numbers tiles, 7 Tangram pieces, plus the Base and reflector.
Five games is the honest reason this beats a single-game Osmo kit. A child who loses interest in Words still has Numbers, Tangram, Newton and Masterpiece. One-game kits have one failure mode and this one has five chances not to hit it.
The physical pieces are the point of the system. A child moves real tangram pieces on a real table and the iPad watches — which is a genuinely different activity from tapping glass, even though a screen is involved.
Replay signal
- Open-ended or one-shot
- Five separate games rather than one, so it degrades gracefully — when one is exhausted, four remain
- Does anything run out
- Nothing physical runs out
- Room to grow
- Numbers and Tangram both scale well past the stated top age; Words does not
- Adult required
- Only to release the iPad, which in most households is the actual constraint
Why we say so: Osmo publishes the five named games and the exact tile counts. Five games in one box is the honest reason this is better value than a single-game Osmo kit, and the iPad requirement is a published dependency rather than an inference.
What’s wrong with it
An iPad is required and not included, which in most houses is the real constraint.
| Games | Five — Tangram, Numbers, Words, Newton and Masterpiece |
|---|---|
| Contents | Osmo Base and reflector, 52 Words tiles, 40 Numbers tiles, 7 Tangram pieces, stackable storage |
| Screen required | Yes — an iPad, not included |

2. The narrower one
Osmo Coding Starter Kit for iPad
Osmo · Coding Starter Kit · maker rates it 5-10
Three coding games — Awbie, Jam and Duo — on the same physical-blocks-plus-iPad system.
- Contents
- Osmo Base and Reflector for iPad, 31 magnetic coding blocks, stackable storage, 3 game apps
- Games
- Coding Awbie, Coding Jam, Coding Duo
- Screen required
- Yes — an iPad is required and is not included
- Compatibility
- All iPads except generations 1-4 and certain newer models; minimum iOS 11
Osmo publishes the same base mechanism with coding blocks and three games, rated 5-10, with published iPad compatibility covering all iPads except generations 1-4 and certain newer models, minimum iOS 11.
Buy this if the interest is already coding. Buy Genius if the interest is “something educational the child will actually use,” because breadth is what protects that purchase.
Replay signal
- Open-ended or one-shot
- Guided by the three games rather than open-ended; Coding Jam is the one with no ending
- Does anything run out
- Nothing physical runs out
- Room to grow
- Three games at rising difficulty, described by Osmo as beginner to expert
- Adult required
- Only to hand over the iPad — which is precisely the friction: this one competes with screen time rather than replacing it
Why we say so: Osmo publishes the 31-block count, the three named games, the iPad requirement and the compatibility list. The iPad dependency is a published requirement, and it is the fact most likely to decide whether this gets used.
What’s wrong with it
Three games instead of five, all on one subject, so a child who dislikes the subject has nowhere to go.

|---|---|

3. The no-screen alternative
MathLink Cubes, Set of 100
Learning Resources · LER4285 · maker rates it 5+
One hundred linking cubes in ten colors that cover counting, patterning and early arithmetic.
- Cubes
- 100, in 10 colors
- Cube size
- 3/4 inch
- Connection
- Links on all sides, with geometric shape cut-outs for patterning
- Stated age
- Ages 5 and up
Learning Resources publishes 100 cubes in 10 colors, ¾ inch, linking on all sides with geometric shape cut-outs for patterning, rated 5+.
The trade is explicit. Osmo brings its own structure and needs an iPad; cubes need an adult with an idea and nothing else. For a household trying to reduce screen dependence rather than dress it up, the cubes are the honest answer.
Replay signal
- Open-ended or one-shot
- Completely open-ended, and unusually cheap for something that is
- Does anything run out
- Nothing runs out
- Room to grow
- The same cubes cover counting at five and volume, arrays and fractions at nine
Why we say so: Learning Resources publishes that the cubes link on all sides with geometric cut-outs. All-sides connection is what turns a counting toy into a building toy — a cube that only joins end to end makes towers, and one that joins on six faces makes arrays, volumes and models.
What’s wrong with it
No app means no scaffolding — an adult has to supply the activity.
| Cubes | 100, in 10 colors |

| Connection | Links on all sides, with geometric shape cut-outs for patterning |
| Stated age | Ages 5 and up |

Coding Critters Ranger & Zip
Learning Resources · LER3081 · maker rates it 4+
Frequently shelved nearby as an 'educational screen-free' option, and aimed years earlier.
- Set size
- 22 pieces
- Screen required
- None — “100% screen-free coding”
- Format
- Interactive pet plus playset and a storybook of coding activities
- Stated age
- Ages 4+
Learning Resources publishes a 22-piece set — an interactive pet, a playset and a storybook of coding activities — 100% screen-free, rated 4+.
For a four-year-old that is a lovely toy. For the six to ten-year-old this Osmo kit targets it is not the same product, and the two get cross-shopped only because both are labeled educational.
Replay signal
- Open-ended or one-shot
- Half toy, half coding set — the pretend play carries on long after the programming stops
- Does anything run out
- Nothing runs out
- Room to grow
- Little: the coding ceiling here is low by design
- Adult required
- The storybook is read-aloud at four; the pet is not
Why we say so: Learning Resources publishes the 22-piece count, the screen-free format and the storybook-led activity structure. We call the coding ceiling low because the published format is a storybook sequence rather than a programmable step count — compare Botley's published 150-step maximum.
What’s wrong with it
A storybook sequence rather than a published ladder of challenges.
| Set size | 22 pieces |
|---|---|
| Screen required | None — “100% screen-free coding” |
| Format | Interactive pet plus playset and a storybook of coding activities |
| Stated age | Ages 4+ |
| Consumables | None |

We are not putting a buy button on this one. It is easy enough to find if you want it anyway — but we would rather send you to something that gets played with twice.
Questions people actually ask
Frequently asked
Does Osmo Genius need an iPad?
Yes. Osmo publishes that an iPad is required and it is not included. The tiles and Tangram pieces do nothing on their own — the Base and reflector let the iPad camera see the table, so the device is the whole mechanism.
What games come with the Osmo Genius Starter Kit?
Five: Tangram, Numbers, Words, Newton and Masterpiece. Osmo publishes the physical contents as an Osmo Base and reflector, 52 Words tiles, 40 Numbers tiles, 7 Tangram pieces and stackable storage.
What age is Osmo Genius for?
Osmo publishes ages 6-10. That upper bound is real rather than cautious — Numbers and Tangram stretch beyond it, but Words does not, so this is a purchase best made at the bottom of the range.
Osmo Genius or Osmo Coding?
Genius, unless the child has already asked for coding specifically. Genius publishes five games across five subjects; Coding publishes three games on one. Breadth is what keeps this kind of purchase in use.
