Three magnifications from one eyepiece and three objectives is how real microscopes work. The number to ignore on any competitor is the one that cannot be reached this way.

What the numbers mean in practice

400x is where cells become visible. That is the practical reason to prefer this over a 50x scope: pond water, onion skin and cheek cells all need it. Below 100x you are looking at texture rather than biology.

Top lighting is what stops it being used four times. The four prepared slides are finished in one session. Everything after that is opaque and needs light from above.

Real glass matters more at high magnification. Plastic optics get away with 20x. At 400x, the lens quality is the whole image.

1.95 lb is portable enough to be carried to the thing. Small detail, real effect — a scope light enough to bring to the kitchen table gets used more than one that lives in a bedroom.

Say the unwelcome thing

Do not buy a microscope on the magnification number

Past the resolving power of the objective lens, more magnification produces a larger, dimmer blur. A box advertising 1200x on plastic optics is selling a number that cannot show more detail than the glass collected.

Buy on lighting and optics. A 400x scope with real glass and top lighting beats a 1200x claim every time.

Who should skip it

A child under nine. The published rating is 9 and older, and focusing at 400x genuinely is fiddly. The 20x/50x Nat Geo scope is rated 8+ and is the better first instrument.

A household with no batteries habit. Three AA cells, not included, and a scope with dead LEDs is a scope nobody uses.

A child who wants space rather than cells. See microscope or telescope first.

The magnification figures are honest arithmetic rather than marketing: eyepiece times objective, three real steps. Boxes claiming 1200x on plastic optics are multiplying past what the lens can resolve, which gives a bigger, dimmer blur.

Dual lighting is the specification that decides usefulness. Light from below works only on things thin enough to see through — the prepared slides. Light from above works on leaves, insects, coins, salt, fabric and sand, which is an unlimited supply.

Five blank slides are the invitation. A microscope with blanks tells a child to go and find something; one with only prepared slides tells them to look at four pictures.
