What a 76 mm telescope actually shows
Worth being concrete, because expectations decide whether a first telescope night is a success.
The Moon, spectacularly. Craters, mountains, the terminator line. This is the object that justifies the purchase and it is available most weeks.
Jupiter’s four large moons, as points of light. Not surface detail — points. Seeing them move night to night is the good part.
Brighter star clusters, as clusters. Genuinely lovely and not what a magazine photograph looks like.
Not colourful nebulae. Long-exposure photographs collect light for hours; an eye cannot. Saying this before the first night prevents the disappointment that ends most first telescopes.
Worth knowing before you buy
Never point this or any telescope at the Sun, and never leave a child alone with one in daylight. Solar observation needs purpose-made filters fitted at the front of the tube; an eyepiece filter is not adequate and eye damage is immediate and permanent.
Who should skip it
A household with nowhere dark to stand. Light pollution limits this more than the aperture does.
A household where no adult wants to be outside at night. Finding objects is hard the first several times. A child left alone with a telescope generally finds nothing and concludes it is broken.
Anyone who wants the finding done for them. The StarSense DX 130AZ publishes an app that identifies where the telescope is pointing, which is a different and easier product.

Celestron publishes a 76 mm (2.99″) aperture, 300 mm (12″) focal length, f/3.95, a 20 mm eyepiece at 15x and a 4 mm eyepiece at 75x, on a “Dobsonian style stand” that sits on a table. It publishes no stated age, calling it “an ideal entry level astronomical telescope.”
The mount is the reason to take this seriously. Cheap tripod telescopes wobble, and a wobbling telescope is the single most common reason a first one gets abandoned — every nudge sends the target out of view. A short, heavy table-top Dobsonian is stable by geometry.
The 20 mm eyepiece at 15x is the one that will get used. Low power means a wide field, which makes finding anything dramatically easier. The 4 mm at 75x is for the Moon on a still night.

Refractors need no mirror alignment and give crisp views of the Moon and planets, which is a genuine advantage for a household that will never collimate anything.
Against the FirstScope, the question is the mount rather than the optics. A table-top Dobsonian removes tripod wobble entirely; a tripod does not.

We include it because the honest comparison is not FirstScope against another telescope — it is telescope against microscope. A microscope needs a table and daylight; a telescope needs darkness, a clear sky, a stable outdoor surface and an adult, all at once.
Buy the telescope when the child has specifically asked and an adult is genuinely interested too. Otherwise the microscope gets used forty times a year and the telescope four.
