What the numbers mean in practice
Notches trade ceiling for reliability. A notched log holds its own position, so the structure survives being bumped. The cost is that the notches have opinions: there is a shape of thing these logs make, and after a while that is the only shape.

A household wanting one construction set for years. The published age floor is 3 and the practical ceiling is around six, which is a narrower window than a plank or tile set.
