The adult question
Whether a toy needs an adult to work is the single biggest predictor of whether it gets used, and Robot Turtles publishes the answer in its rules: an adult plays the computer, every game. That makes it an activity that happens when a grown-up is free — which, in most houses, is not every day.
Botley reverses it. After the first session, the child programs and runs it alone, whenever they think of it. For regular, unprompted play, that is worth more than any other difference between them.
What each teaches
Both teach sequencing — putting instructions in order and watching the result. That is the core idea at this age, and both deliver it without a screen.
Robot Turtles goes one step further in ideas. Its published rules add function cards, a first taste of grouping instructions into a reusable block.
Botley goes further in length. Programs of up to 150 steps and 16 coded interactions let a child build long, complicated routes around obstacles they placed themselves.
